New publishing contract encourages distribution and revision

The new contract clarifies the publisher's obligations and the authors' rights. For example, it states that authors always have the right to go to a different publisher or rewrite their Acta publication if they so desire."We have no need to lock our authors into unfavourable contracts; we rather encourage distribution or revision", says Thomas Neidenmark, chair of Acta's editorial committee. "AUS's right to publish the work cannot be waived, but on the other hand, the author has complete freedom to do whatever he or she wants with it after publication." Looking at Creative Commons licenses AUS has also started looking at so-called Creative Commons licenses. These licenses are are a type of standardised terms and conditions which could facilitate and increase the digital distribution of the publisher's publications. "Such licenses are becoming increasingly common in the research community", says Thomas Neidenmark. "But if we introduce Creative Commons it will obviously be on a voluntary basis. Even if we as a publisher can see the great benefits, the researchers have to want it themselves." About 30 publications this year There will be about 30 publications this year - a number that Thomas Neidenmark hopes to surpass next year. "We feel that we have a renewed and deeper contact with the series editors, and I think they like our commitment to the development of AUS. We are simply looking forward to an even better 2013." Almost exactly one year has passed since the Stockholm University Library drew up new guidelines for AUS. Throughout the year, the working practices have been restructured, streamlined and opened up to new opportunities for distribution and impact. All publications are now published in full text in DiVA and printed on demand at cost price. The books can be bought in the library's own online shop, or through other online booksellers. Text: Emi-Simone Zawall Facts about Creative Commons In simple terms, Creative Commons licenses define the rights of others to use an original work, as opposed to 'copyright', which defines the author's rights and protection of the work. Creative Commons thus makes it possible for creators who want to share their work to do so in full or in part. The creator chooses a license based on the desired permissions and restrictions for the work, after which he or she gets a license agreement that fits these preferences. The creator then inserts a mark along with a brief license text that specifies which license applies to the work. The creator can never waive the moral right, i.e., the right to be recognised as the creator of the work. More information on various licenses and how the CC licenses work is available here: www.creativecommons.se .

To the list of databases You can limit the various criteria in the right hand column. Click on the plus sign (+) to activate and the minus sign (-) to disable. These are only available in Swedish at the moment. You can also limit by kategori/category (for example, if you only want e-book platforms) or by subject (such as "law" or "art"). It is also possible to limit by ämnesord/keyword. Note that some databases may have no category definition. By pressing the orange button "Remove all facets" you will be directed to the start page of the database list, and with all facets deactivated, even starting letters. Make sure you do not have any facets activated when you select a letter and get zero hits.

The library is one of the university's faces outward. It is the students' working place and learning environment, and should reflect the university's identity. The issue of rebuilding the library for better adaptation to the particular needs of students for a good study environment has been discussed in recent years. The need for more and better study rooms is urgent. The premises must be adapted to changing working methods and the interior is worn. Students have complained about the worn environment that no longer meets their needs for a long time. Purpose To improve students' study and work environments. Group study rooms will be transformed into more efficient units with better ventilation and more functional furnishings. It should be easy to distinguish between the quiet and semi-quiet environments in the library's open spaces. To adapt the premises to new ways of working (such as the need for electricity for laptops). To use the library premises more efficiently. To create more flexible workspaces in order for patrons to get more light and space for working in groups. Contact: Birgitta Löfgren , General Manager 08-162580

Note that the branch libraries have different loan periods and opening hours. From June 11th you will not be able to renew Textbooks yourself via the website. Instead, you can send an email to the library and ask to renew your loans. From June 11th to August 15th, you cannot reserve Textbooks. This is due to our library system not being capable of handling queues & holds while applying summer loans on all books. We apologize for any inconvenience. Researchers who need books that are out on loan during the summer have the opportunity to request interlibrary loans for books on loan. Interlibrary loans are ordered through "My pages" on our website's main page. From Monday, June 11th books ordered from the closed stacks will be retrieved once a day. Orders made before 9:30 will be available the same day. Orders placed after 9:30 will be available the next weekday. Read more about the summer opening hours and loan conditions

In such cases where you know the database name, you just type its name in the search box. Would you rather see which databases are available on a given topic, you can search by the subject. Then, from the list of results, you narrow your search to databases under the heading "Refine your search." If there are databases that you often return to, you can save them on your personal page, under "My Databases", located on the site's homepage. This means that you do not have to search for them the next time you want to use them. To access this feature, you must be logged in. When logged in you will see the text "Save searchhit" in the right corner of each entry in the list of results.

An important component of the search function is known as a Discovery Tool, which will be in place by the end of the year. The function "My pages" on the home page is customizable by logging in. Here you can see your loans, renew your loans, place orders and see booked group rooms. You also can create custom lists of databases, journals, books and articles, and save your searches. Navigation is based on the user groups students, researchers and other visitors. The news flow will be published in blog format on the homepage along with a calendar function and an image flow. A new FAQ has been compiled to provide answers to frequently asked questions (will be published shortly). Along with the new website we have also launched a new discussion and information forum for university researchers, the Research blog (in Swedish only). Two new services will also be available; the possibility of ordering Acta titles such as Print on Demand and the opportunity for researchers to request digital copies of older works.

The Beta is updated with an improve searchfunction where you search in one field, and receive results on books, journals, databases, articles and the site itself. You will also be able to refine your search criterias on the result page. The frontpage customization is at its early stages but you are able to log in and see your loans, interlibrary loans and orders. You can also view and have direct entries from the group study rooms area to your bookings and such. The normal pages now have a right column where you will be able to find much information such as contact information to related areas and links. There is still much to be done, and is now going to be added often while the beta is running. Please do test the functions and let us know what you think, and how we can further improve them to the webbteam
